MUSIC: Hartford Symphony to present 'Spring Strings'

Apr. 15—The Hartford Symphony Orchestra Spotlight Series continues today with "Spring Strings," filmed at the Connecticut Historical Society.

Tickets are $15. The concert will be available to stream today through Sunday, May 9.

The Spotlight series is a new way to experience the HSO with 60-minute performances by HSO ensembles and guests recorded at venues in and around Hartford, and available on-demand for a limited time.

"Spring Strings" will feature Edward German's "Three Dances" from "Henry VIII" by Philip Glass' String Quartet No. 2; "Company" by Florence Price's Adante; "Lullaby" by George Gershwin; "Hedwig's Theme" by John Williams (arr. Peter Zay); and Beethoven's "String Trio in C Minor, Mvt. I & II."

The concert is performed by three ensenbles:

HSO String Quartet: Lisa Rautenberg, violin; Martha Kayser, violin; Nicholas Borghoff, viola; and Jeffrey Krieger, cello).

HSO Piacere Quartet: Jaroslaw Lis, violin; Deborah Tyler, violin; Michael Wheeler, viola; and Jia Cao, cello

HSO Mosaic Trio: Lu Sun Friedman, violin; Pat Daly Vance, viola; and Peter Zay, cello.

—The Hartford Symphony Orchestra will also present a virtual Sunday Serenades concert titled "Sculpture and the Symphony: From Prometheus

to Piazzolla," available through June 10.

The performance was filmed at the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art.

The HSO and Wadsworth teamed up to set the Wadsworth exhibition "Ancient Made Modern: Paul Manship" to a program of chamber music curated by HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal. Watch HSO musicians perform music by Samuel Barber, Astor Piazzolla, Richard Strauss, and Ludwig van Beethoven surrounded by the shimmering sculpture by Paul Manship.

Manchester Symphony and Chorale

MANCHESTER — The Manchester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale will offer its final, free online master class Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The topic is "Hidden Choral & Orchestral Jewels by Black Composers" part 2, presented by Carolina Flores and Luca Antonucci. Flores is chorale director of the Manchester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale and a music professor at Manchester Community College. Antonucci is the orchestra director.

STORRS — The Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts will live stream the UConn School of Fine Arts Music Faculty Showcase Friday, April 23, at 7:30 p.m.

The event will feature music department faculty Solomiya Ivakhiv (violin), Sophie Shao (cello), Louis Hanzlik (trumpet), and Eric Reed (French horn), with special guest Tanya Bannister (piano).

South Church

NEW BRITAIN — South Church will present husband-and-wife duo Annie Trépanier and Steve Larson in a virtual concert Sunday at 4 p.m. on the church's YouTube channel.

Trépanier (violin) and Larson (viola) met as members of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada and have been making music together ever since. The couple lives in Winsted and will perform together and as part of the Cuatro Puntos Ensemble, Adaskin String Trio, and Ensemble Schumann.

For Sunday's concert, the duo will premier a program featuring works by Penderecki, Handel, and Michael White.

Music at the Red Door

WEST HARTFORD — Music at the Red Door will hold its Spring Chamber Music Concert Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Saint John's Episcopal Church, 679 Farmington Ave.

The cost is $20.

The concert will feature HSO Concertmaster Leonid Sigal and Friends and will be livestreamed and available to a limited in-person audience.

Sigal will be on violin, joined by Aekyung Kim, viola; Peter Zay, cello; and Andrius Žlabys, piano.

Coast Guard Band

GROTON — The U.S. Coast Guard Band will present "An Evening of Chamber Music" Friday at 7 p.m. at the Groton Bible Chapel, 66 Toll Gate Road. Commander Adam Williamson will lead a lively performance of Mozart's wind octet "Serenade in C" and clarinetist and chief musician Cedric Mayfield will perform an improvised medley of spirituals and pop tunes.

The Bushnell will present a special livestream performance of "Titanique: The Maiden Voyage Concert" Sunday, May 2, at 7:30 p.m.

The show is the combination of the music of Celine Dion and the Oscar-winning film "Titanic" that turns one of the greatest love stories of all time into a hysterical and joyful slay-fest.

SOMERS — The Somers Cultural Commission will present a series of 18 free, outdoor concerts at the Gazebo at 19 Battle St. during the spring, summer, and fall.
