MUSIC: Manchester musicians take the stage tonight

Jul. 29—MANCHESTER — Musicians from the Manchester Symphony Orchestra, led by music director Luca Antonucci, perform tonight at 7 at Center Memorial Park.

The concert is free. Bring your lawn chair and listen to a wind ensemble and a string ensemble in a program of classical and popular favorites.

This concert is part of Beller's Music summer concert series.

On Thursday, Aug. 5, Suite Sounds, a string plus flute ensemble of musicians from Manchester Symphony, will perform, followed at 6 p.m. by the Goza Latin Band.

—Paul Serra & Country Gold will perform on Friday from 7 to 11 p.m. at the Army & Navy Club, 1090 Main St. There is a $10 cover charge.

The band shell concerts are from 7-9 p.m. outdoors, weather permitting, on the grounds of Manchester Community College, Exit 1 off Interstate 384.

Somers

The final two concerts of the Somers Cultural Commission's summer series are:

Thursday, Aug. 5: The Boogie Boys, featuring swing and country from the '50s to the '70s

The concerts are held at the Gazebo at 19 Battle St. from 6 to 8 p.m.

Admission is free, but a free-will offering is gratefully appreciated.

Bring a picnic, a folding chair or a blanket, family, friends and children. There is a playground on site.

After a four-week break, the commission's fall concert series will begin on Saturday, Sept. 4.

East Hartford

The Sounds of Summer, a series of free, family-friendly concerts, continues tonight with Sound Pipers, playing reggae fusion.

The last concert in the series will be held Thursday, Aug. 5, when The Score plays classic party rock.

Concert are held at the riverside amphitheater at Great River Park, 301 East River Drive, from 6-8 p.m. In case of inclement weather, cancellations will be posted on the town of East Hartford website and on Facebook.

Hartford

The Paul Brown Monday Night Jazz series will feature the Warren Wolf Quartet on Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the Performance Pavilion at Bushnell Park.

Andrew Wilcox will be the opening act, starting at 6 p.m.

The quartet comprises Warren Wolfon vibraphone, Alex Brown on piano, Vicente Archer on bass, and Carroll "CV" Dashiell III on drums.

Wolf is a multi-instrumentalist from Baltimore. He has played with or recorded with a number of musicians, including Wynton Marsalis and The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, David "Fathead" Newman, and Wycliffe Gordon.

On Aug. 9, Mary DiPaola will be the opening act, followed by headliner Firey String Sistas.

In case of rain, the concerts will be virtual, streaming from the facebook page.

Storrs

The Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on the UConn Storrs campus concludes its Midsummer Music Series today with the Parker Quartet live and livestreamed on the Jorgensen Digital Stage.

The program will include Florence Price's selections from Five Folksongs in Counterpoint and Bedrich Smetana's String Quartet No. 1 in E Minor, "From My Life."

Founded and based in Boston, the quartet is on faculty at Harvard University as the Department of Music's Blodgett Artists-in-Residence, as well as in-residence at the University of South Carolina School of Music. The Parker

Quartet's recording of György Liegeti's complete works for string quartet earned them the 2011 Grammy Award for Best Chamber Music Performance, of which they are the last string quartet to win in this category.

Tickets are $36 for general admission seating and $30 for livestreaming.

A pops concert by the Golden Scroll Soloists will be held on the lawn at the University of Saint Joseph and livestreamed Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

The Corvettes Doo Wop Revue, which celebrate music from the 1950s, takes the stage at Cheney Hall, 177 Hartford Road, on Friday, Aug. 27, from 7 to 8:30 p.m.
