MUSIC: Manchester Symphony to perform Saturday

Feb. 9—Manchester Symphony Orchestra and Chorale will present the program "Black Excellence" Saturday at 7:30 p.m. in Bailey Auditorium at Manchester High School, 134 East Middle Turnpike.

Jeffrey A. Spenner will be guest conductor. He will give the pre-concert talk at 6:45 p.m.

The program will include William Grant Still's Symphony No. 1 and Concertante in G Major by Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

Tickets are $20; free for youths younger than 18 years, students of any age, and military personnel.

—Jukebox Jim will be the featured performers at the French Social Club, 341 Kelly Road, Vernon, on Saturday at 8 p.m.

Karaoke is held every Friday night at 8 p.m.

—The Somers Cultural Commission will continue its coffeehouse series Sunday at 1 p.m. at Piedmont Hall, 604 Main St. with It Takes Two, Joe Pereira and Amanda Rowe, presenting "The Vegas Experience, American Duets and More."

The series is sponsored by the Somers Cultural Commission.

Liquid refreshments will be served; bring your own snacks and treats.

—The Lviv National Philharmonic Orchestra of Ukraine will perform at Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts on the UConn Storrs campus Monday at 7:30 p.m., led by Theodore Kuchar.

Internationally acclaimed for her work as soloist and chamber musician, Ukrainian-born violinist and University of Connecticut School of Fine Arts faculty member Solomiya Ivakhiv will share the main stage. She is the 2022 recipient of the Merited Artist of Ukraine, the highest honor awarded to artists in her home country.

—The Music Program at Eastern Connecticut State University will hold the first concert of its spring concert season Saturday at 2:30 p.m. in the Fine Arts Instructional Center Foyer.

"Hold Fast to Dreams: A Recital for Voice and Piano" will be presented by faculty members Emily Riggs, soprano, and David Ballena, piano, celebrating the rich tradition of poetry and song in the U.S.

Admission is free and no tickets are required. Donations will be accepted at the door. Proceeds will be used to support music program students and programming.

—Real Art Ways will present trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith and guitarist Joe Morris Sunday at 2:30 p.m. as part of the monthly music series, ImprovisationsNOW.

Smith was a finalist for the 2013 Pulitzer Prize in Music for his composition "Ten Freedoms of Summers (Defining Moments in History of the United States of America)."

Tickets are $15 general admission, $12 for Real Art Ways members, and $5 for full-time students.
