Musical chairs: Boynton Beach names third police chief in one month

"You can't tell the players without a scorecard" was once shouted at baseball games by vendors looking to sell the cardboard record keeper to fans.

You might do a brisk business these days selling scorecards to Boynton Beach residents so they can keep up with their revolving door of police chiefs.

Last week, the city announced that Assistant Chief Joe DeGiulio is the new interim police chief, replacing Vanessa Snow, who took over on a temporary basis April 22 following the resignation of Michael Gregory.

That's three police chiefs in the course of about a month and puts the city in a position where it's working with an interim city manager (Jim Stables), interim fire chief (Hugh Bruder) and an interim police chief (DeGuilio) to replace the interim police chief (Snow) who replaced the permanent police chief (Gregory).

And none of that figures to change any time soon.

A permanent city manager will likely have to be in place before permanent police and fire chiefs are hired. The city commission has tasked itself with finding a new city manager in a nationwide search, but that's likely to take months to happen. Many months.

Considering that the commission is also contemplating a possible merger with the Palm Beach Sheriff's Office and the continuing clamor over the death of 13-year-old dirt bike rider Stanley Davis III while he was being chased by Officer Mark Sohn, you couldn't blame a resident for feeling a bit unsettled about the entire situation.

I'll be keeping a close eye on it and report on developments as they occur. As always, thanks for subscribing to the Palm Beach Post.

Just an aside: I'm covering the Nikolas Cruz death penalty trial for Gannett, parent company to the Palm Beach Post.

There was a lot of emotion on Wednesday, a day after a lone gunman killed 21 people in Texas, including 19 children, at an elementary school.

I'll keep my opinions to myself, but agree 100% with prosecutor Carolyn McCann's words in court on Wednesday: "There have been 27 school shootings so far this year. There's going to be more, unfortunately."
