Musical duo leading the charge to make 'Sunday Variety' show a brand

Jan. 4—Months ago Nick and Mandy Meyers planted a seed to help cultivate a creative community.

Then the hard work came into play to build it.

During the last four months, the couple has hosted "Sunday Variety" at Juno Brewery, which features local performers and vendors.

"As a musician, we were looking for more opportunities to play music again," Nick Meyers says. "We didn't want to perform at a bar because we wanted to make the event family-friendly."

This is also the reason the couple hosts the event from 3-6 p.m. the second Sunday of the month.

The next event will take place Sunday, Jan. 8, at Juno Brewery, 1501 First St. NW.

The couple perform under the moniker Mack N Cheeze, where they perform original hip hop, pop and trip hop.

They will be joined on stage by poet Marcial Delgado, as well as musicians Eryn Bent and Meal & Gritz.

Nick Meyers says there will also be pop-up art and vendors.

Mandy Meyers says they've put on four events and each one has grown.

"We've been pretty lucky because of the network that we have," she says. "Through music, we know quite a few people and booking them has been pretty amazing."

Each performer gets about 20 minutes of performing on stage.

The Meyers have been performing for more than a year together.

"Mandy has been a singer for a long time," he says. "I've been a songwriter for a long time and we bring these songs together. We sing about what's going on in the world without being too preachy."

Mandy Meyers says each show gets more of an audience, which makes her happy because it is building that community.

"The most beautiful thing to see are the connections being made," she says. "It's not just the connections between artists. We are seeing the performers connect with the audience and that leads to different types of collaborations."

Nick Meyers says the goal is to make the variety show into a staple.

"Having the community come out and support has been an amazing feeling for the show," he says. "We want to continue to work out the kinks and add more performers. Families are able to come and spend a bit of Sunday afternoon listening to live performances before the chaos of the week begins with school on Monday. It's a win-win for everyone."
