How Muskegon Co. residents can get a free gun lock

MUSKEGON, Mich. (WOOD) — If you’re a resident of Muskegon County, you can get a free gun lock thanks to a new initiative from Trinity Health Muskegon and the Muskegon Police Department.

The gun locks are available now through March 31, unless supplies run out sooner, Trinity Health Michigan said Thursday in a release. You can have one delivered directly to you, or you can pick it up at the police department.

It’s all part of an effort to reduce firearm injuries, suicides and homicides, according to Trinity Health Michigan.

“By providing free gun locks and promoting safe storage practices, we aim to empower residents to take proactive steps in preventing firearm-related incidents,” Chief Tim Kozal, public safety director for the city of Muskegon, said in a statement.

The initiative also coincides with Michigan’s new secure storage law, which goes into effect Feb. 13. Under the law, you must keep unattended weapons unloaded and locked with a device — or stored in a locked container — if it’s “reasonably known” a minor is likely to be on the premises, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.

“The research underscores the crucial role safe firearm storage plays in safeguarding our children, families, and communities,” Holly Alway, injury prevention coordinator at Trinity Health Muskegon, stated. “…This gun lock delivery program will help ensure a safer community for all residents.”
