With his Morton-White Pass football team facing an unwanted bye week, Lee Metcalf found an unorthodox way to fill it, linking up with W.F. West to play the Bearcats' JV squad Thursday. The older small-school squad ended up taking down the younger boys from the big town, 28-12, in a close matchup that gave both sides a pretty even look and counted as a non-league game.
"They probably would be competitive in the Central (2B League)," Metcalf said. "They've got some dudes. In the first half it was a little closer; we had some dumb penalties that killed drives. But they kept things close, credit to them, they played hard."
Like its varsity program, W.F. West was supposed to face 1A Eatonville this week, but that game was nixed with the Cruisers getting shut down due to COVID-19 cases.
MWP had been staring at the free week in its schedule for months, but after back-to-back big losses to Pe Ell-Willapa Valley and Napavine, the T-Wolves were even more desperate to get back on the field.
"Our kids wanted to go out and take out their frustrations a little bit," Metcalf said.
Early on, that didn't translate into offense or points, with the Timberwolves taking an 8-6 lead into halftime. But coming out of the break, the hosts began to exert their will more on the ground, with Carter Dantinne scoring touchdowns of 15, 75, and 22 yards to pull away.
Dantinne finished with 189 yards on 14 carries. As a team, Morton-White Pass ran for 236 yards.
The T-Wolves also came down with a pair of picks and three sacks on defense.
Morton-White Pass will return to 2B play next week taking on Ilwaco for the second time; the T-Wolves beat the Fishermen 44-8 in a short-notice matchup Week 1.
