Myrtle Beach, volunteers open new attraction at city skate park
MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. (WBTW)– Skaters expressed how much they love Myrtle Beach, and its new skate park that is finally completed.
On Saturday, city officials and community members celebrated the grand opening for a new skateboarding bowl at the Matt Hughes Skate Park.
The park, recreation and sports tourism department partnered with the Friends of the Skate Park Foundation and Surfside Beach-based Heart of Stoke to make this possible.
Phase one of the park was completed five and half years ago, and today the ribbon cutting was held for phase two which is the completion of the bowl.
Terry Grimble, director and founder of the foundation, says they raised $41,000 for the bowl.
“This has been a calling of mine and a lot of my purpose in life,” Grimble said. “I work with communities all over the Carolinas building skate parks and to see any project you five and half years on come together it’s an amazing feeling.”
Grimble says this is the only skate park on the Grand Strand and he knows generations of skaters will enjoy this for decades to come. But he believes more parks are needed.
“Every community needs a park,” he said. “There needs to be at least a minimum of 7 more in the Grand Strand stretching from Georgetown to Conway and North Myrtle. Definitely a great skate community here and it’s only growing.”
The skate park is open every day as early as 6am. It is located along 33rd ave., near Myrtle Beach Middle School.
