Mysterious green liquid oozes through Venice’s Grand Canal; police probe under way

Venice police are seeking the source of a neon-green patch of liquid that appeared in the city’s famous Grand Canal on Sunday.

The phosphorescent ooze spread through the water near the famous Rialto Bridge and was called in by residents.

The water appeared to be infused with a dye used to trace water leaks, the country’s ANSA news agency reported. Environmental officials were testing samples of the rogue water to confirm that and get more specific information, and Veneto regional Mayor Luca Zaia said police are working to determine who is responsible.

Michele di Bari, the Interior Ministry’s representative in Venice, called an emergency meeting to plan cleanup, ANSA reported.

Local police were examining surveillance video to see if environmental activists protesting this weekend’s Volgalonga regatta were to blame, BBC News reported.

It also might have been an act of vandalism by tourists, ANSA speculated.

Authorities assured the public that the liquid was not a public health threat, German broadcaster DW reported.
