N.C. couple charged in Cherokee County with transmitting obscene material to child

A North Carolina couple have been arrested on multiple charges of transmitting obscene material to a child, according to Centre Police Chief Kirk Blankenship.

The two were extradited and charged Thursday after Chief Investigator Randy Mayorga responded to a parent's concerns about "extremely explicit" messages found on a minor's phone. He investigated, with assistance from Rainbow City Police Lt. Jason Higgins.

Higgins is a member of the state's Internet Crimes Against Children team; he assisted with the technological aspects of the case, including extracting information from the cellular device.

Shannon K. Donovan, 21, of Statesville, North Carolina, was booked into the Cherokee County jail Thursday, charged with 18 counts of transmitting obscene material to a child.

Anthony Domineck, 39, of Maiden, North Carolina, is charged with three counts of the same offense.

After the report from the parent, investigators were able to identify suspects in the case, and obtained warrants for their arrest.

Blankenship commended Mayorga for his persistence in investigating the case, and Higgins for the resources he provided.

The chief said such cases can be complex, but advised local residents to speak up if they have relevant information because protecting children is one of the department's highest priorities.
