New York Assemblyman Tom Abinanti Tuesday trailed challenger MaryJane Shimsky in Westchester County’s 92nd District.

Abinanti, a six-term incumbent lawmaker from Pleasantville, was facing an uphill battle to hold onto his seat against Shimsky, who won the backing of the Democratic leadership and the progressive Working Families Party.

As of 11 p.m., Shimsky led with 3,155 votes or 56% compared to 2,453 votes, or 44%, with 3% of votes counted.

Shimsky accuses Abinanti of becoming too comfortable in power and not working hard enough for the district.

A veteran Westchester County legislator, she blasted him for voting against the third extension of the state’s COVID-19 eviction moratorium.

He countered that the vote protected mom-and-pop small landlords in the suburban district.

Political warning bells have been ringing for Abinanti for a couple of years now.

In 2020, Abinanti eked out a narrow victory against political newcomer Jennifer Williams in a race where he led by just 25 votes on Primary Night. He went on to win a sixth term in Albany.

The winner of the Democratic primary will take on Republican Carlo Valenti of Hawthorne in the November general election.
