Apr. 9—The Jamestown High School girls track and field team keeps rewriting the school record books.

"A lot of our girls had a really good day," JHS co-head coach Mike Dietz said. "I am really happy with the results."

The Blue Jays competed at Valley City Tuesday evening in the team's first outdoor meet of the season. The Jays finished second out of the eight competing teams. West Fargo Sheyenne won the meet with 175.5 points while the Blue Jays finished with 161.5 points. Lisbon rounded out the top-three teams with 97 points.

"They kids were pretty fired up for outdoor and in track, it's way more fun outdoor," Dietz said. "A lot of them didn't know what to expect so that was the hard part for some of them, but they figured it out and they got to their events on time and they really competed well."

Annie Nabwe broke the JHS school record in the 100-meter dash, beating Meghan Orr's 2016 record by 0.01 seconds. Nabwe crossed the finish line at 12.52 and was closely followed by her younger sister, Yolanda, who ended up second with a time of 12.77 seconds. The two sisters were the only two runners who finished in the span of 12 seconds.

Nabwe also broke the outdoor shot put record, breaking Jill Schlenker's 2007 length by more than five feet. Nabwe threw her shot 44 feet, 10 inches, eclipsing her competition by more than seven feet. In the jumps, the junior launched herself to a 16-foot, 7.5-inch jump. Nabwe won the long jump competition and placed second in the javelin.

Nabwe and her younger sister — along with other Blue Jays — qualified for the 2021 Class A State Track and Field Meet Tuesday. Meghan Ford qualified in both the 1,600 meters (5:09.68) and the 3,200 meters (11:05.26). Eighth-grader Julia Skari won the 300-meter hurdles and was close to qualifying for her first outdoor state contest.

With so many state qualifiers and near qualifiers, Dietz said that he and other coaches will be working with athletes to drop time and strengthen muscles so that all athletes will be primed and ready to go by the time regionals and state rolls around.

"This is what we are going to keep building on," Dietz said. "Our end goal is having state champions and state placers. That's where our training should get us to (because) we are building until the end of the year.

"It's a good start but our goals are not met yet," Dietz said. "We want to finish on top and we want to have the best season possible. It's not how you start, it's how you finish."
