Rhode Island, whether the actual state or fictionalized versions of it, has been the setting for a handful of TV series over the last few decades.

And that's not even counting how many times it is mentioned as the home state of key characters in series with out-of-state settings, including current New York crime dramas "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit" and "Blue Bloods."

The Ocean State even figures into a bit of television history: It's the setting of the first daytime drama to be regularly broadcast in color.

Here's a quick look at several series set in Rhode Island:

'Another Period'

This period sitcom followed an influential fictional family, the Bellacourts of Newport, around 1902. Star Natasha Leggero described the premise of the show in a 2016 People magazine interview as what would happen "if the Kardashians moved into Downton Abbey."

It aired three seasons, from 2015 to 2018, on Comedy Central.

'Ben Jerrod'

This 1963 soap opera, set in the fictional Rhode Island town of Indian Hill, only lasted three months. It has been noted by TV Guide as the first daytime drama to be regularly broadcast in color. The title character was a lawyer defending a socialite accused of murder. The ill-fated soap replaced part of the time slot that had been filled by "The Merv Griffin Show" on NBC.

'Brotherhood'

The crime drama centered on the fictional Caffee family of Providence, who had members in the Irish mob, Rhode Island politics and law enforcement.

It was filmed on location in Providence and aired from 2006 to 2008 on cable network Showtime.

This short-lived, mid-season-replacement legal drama series starred Julianna Margulies as defense lawyer Elizabeth Canterbury. The fictional Canterbury and her husband, played by Aidan Quinn, had just moved to Providence. It aired on Fox in March and April 2008.

The show brought cameras into Providence Municipal Judge Frank Caprio's courtroom, initially as a cable-access program, but it was picked up by the Rhode Island ABC affiliate in 2000 and became nationally syndicated in 2018.

Caprio also appeared in the A&E series "Parking Wars."

'Doctor Doctor'

The sitcom starred Matt Frewer as Dr. Mike Stratford and was set in the office of Northeast Medical Partners in Providence.

It aired on CBS from 1989 to 1991.

'Eastwick'

"Eastwick," a TV adaptation of the movie "The Witches of Eastwick," was set in a fictional Rhode Island town commonly thought to be a combination of East Greenwich and Wickford.

This short-lived ABC comedy-drama was adapted from the 1987 movie "The Witches of Eastwick," which was, itself, adapted from the 1984 novel of the same title by John Updike. In a lecture at Brown University that year, Updike acknowledged that the fictional Eastwick was somewhere in Rhode Island, but refused to confirm popular speculation that it was a combination of East Greenwich and Wickford.

The series aired on ABC in 2009.

The animated comedy series is set in the fictional city of Quahog, Rhode Island, whose skyline is remarkably similar to that of the non-fictional Providence. Created by Rhode Island School of Design grad Seth MacFarlane, the series follows the exploits of the Griffin family, including mom and dad Lois and Peter, children Meg, Chris and Stewie, and their talking dog, Brian.

The series debuted in January 1999, and, except for a hiatus from 2002 to 2005, it's been going strong ever since, airing on Fox, with Season 23 approved and expected to come out sometime this year.

Teenager Molly Stage, played by Reagan Dale Neis, dealt with her embarrassing family members, including when mom Mary, played by Julia Sweeney, entered them in the mother-daughter Quahog Festival Pageant.

Filmed in California, it aired on the WB in 2001 and 2002.

'Parking Wars'

This reality series, following the people responsible for ticketing, booting and towing illegally parked vehicles, started in 2008 in Philadelphia, adding several cities over the years, including Providence in 2012's Season 6.

It aired on A&E from 2008 to 2012.

'Providence'

Plastic surgeon Sydney Hansen, played by Melina Kanakaredes, gives up an L.A. practice and returns to her hometown of Providence to be closer to family, which includes her veterinarian father, played by Mike Farrell, of "M*A*S*H" fame. The show, which lasted five seasons, was largely shot in Los Angeles but did travel to Rhode Island to film a few scenes and included a cameo by then-Mayor Vincent A. "Buddy" Cianci.

It aired on NBC 1999 to 2002.

Although many of the scenes shot in Newport are actually set in New York City, some of them, in Seasons 1 and 2, are set in Newport, which was the summer home of New York's high society. And producers have promised that more of the story in Season 3 will be set in the City by the Sea.

It airs on HBO.
