Name your own price at annual fundraiser to support Lusscroft Farm in Wantage

WANTAGE - There will be a "barn sale" at Lusscroft Farm on Oct. 28, but it will be the contents of the main barn which customers can buy for what they think they are worth.

And, even if visitors find nothing worth purchasing in the barn, the views of foliage on the trip to get there will be "priceless."

The annual October event has special sale conditions, buyers can "name their own price" and, if accepted, take the goods home. The sale helps raise money to repair the farm, located at 50 Neilson Road in Wantage.

The main barn is seen from near the entrance to the Lusscroft Farm complex on Nielson Road, Wantage.

Also near the farm is Space Farms Zoo, High Point State Park, Sunrise Mountain and Stokes State Park.

What's for sale is donations which have been collected in the main barn. The merchandise runs the gamut from sporting goods to patio furniture; all manner of dishes and home decorations; and furniture, from bedroom sets to wooden cabinets and lamps and pictures for the wall.

All have been donated to The Heritage and Agriculture Association, a non-profit organization working to stabilize and restore the buildings of the agriculturally significant farm.

The only thing that is priced are the hundreds of books for sale in the barn, which also are a wide variety, from "first-time readers" to novels.

As part of its agreement with the Department of Environmental Protection, which owns the farm as part of Stokes State Forest, the group is looking to create and maintain the center to focus on education and preservation of the farm.

In addition to the historic value of the farm complex, the site is also used for outdoor recreation, equine trails and show rings, heirloom gardening, forestry, and other parts of farming such as heirloom gardening and marketing value-added products.

Each spring, the association also sponsors a weekend of demonstrating old techniques of maple sugaring as well as modern methods of collecting maple sap and creating maple syrup and other products.

Included among the 23 buildings of the complex are the Turner Mansion, also known as the Manorhouse, the Manager's Dwelling, the Outlook Lodge and the picturesque dairy barn.
