Name released of plane crash victim

The man who died Saturday in a plane crash at Wichita Valley Airport was Tom Cox of Waldron, Arkansas, Sgt. Dan Buesing, spokesman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, said.

Witnesses told officials the plane was attempting takeoff about 1:25 p.m. Saturday when it flipped, causing the aircraft to catch fire, according to Lance Liggett, Wichita Falls district coordinator for the Texas Division of Emergency Management.

The Federal Aviation Administration was called to the scene, and the crash is under investigation, first-responder officials said.

Cox had driven from Arkansas to purchase the plane, according to a post Saturday on the Wichita County Sheriff's Office Facebook page. He was pinned in the plane when it crashed.

The Iowa Park Volunteer Fire Department responded at 1:30 p.m. Saturday and found that the pilot, the plane's sole occupant, had succumbed to his injuries, according to a Facebook post Saturday on the IPVFD page.

Agencies responding Saturday included the WCSO, the Sheppard Air Force Base Fire Department, Wichita Falls Fire Department, Wichita West Volunteer Fire Department, the DPS, the Iowa Park Police Department and the TDEM, according to officials.
