Name of teen killed in late-night Cumberland County shooting released

The name of a teenager who died after a shooting in Cumberland County last week was released Tuesday and officials announced the name of an individual wanted for questioning.

Dakota Lee Johnson, 17, of the 4500 block of Sterling Street in Fayetteville, was shot in the 2300 block of Indian Creek Drive shortly before midnight Thursday, according to a Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Minutes later, officers with the Fayetteville Police Department were called to the 1800 block of Sapona Road near Plymouth Street for a car accident, an official said Thursday. The wreck happened less than a mile from the shooting scene.

According to a Fayetteville Police Department report of the crash, the teen was driving a 2000 Ford sedan at 35 mph when he ran off the right side of the road and hit a parked car outside a convenience store.

Johnson. who was found to be suffering from a gunshot wound, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The circumstances of the shooting remained under investigation Thursday, the Sheriff’s Office said.

On Tuesday afternoon, the Sheriff's Office said Damien Antwon Evans Jr., 21, of Fayetteville is wanted for questioning in the killing.
