Names of 7 fallen heroes to be added to Port Huron memorial Monday
Editor's note: The name of the memorial has been corrected.
Seven fallen hero names will be added to the Veterans War Memorial in Pine Grove Park following Monday's Port Huron Memorial Day Parade.
The parade starts at 11 a.m., ending with a ceremony at Pine Grove Park.
The following names will be added, according to the memorial committee:
Cpl. Fredrick J. Sanford, U.S. Army
Born Feb. 20, 1892 in Hamilton, Ontario
Died Jan. 2, 1940 at home in Port Huron as a direct result of being gassed on Aug. 31, 1918 near Verdun in WWI. He is buried in Lakeside Cemetery.
Pfc. Evert I. Main, U.S. Army
Born July 13, 1925 in St. Clair, Michigan
Killed in action in France Dec. 23, 1944 in WWII. He is buried in the American Cemetery, Saint Avold, France.
Sgt. Charles H. McMillan, U.S. Army
Born in New York City May 22, 1916, a resident of the city of St. Clair in 1940
Killed in action in Germany, Apr. 7, 1945 in WWII. He is buried in the Margraten American Cemetery in the Netherlands.
Pfc. Keith F. Prior, U.S. Army
Born July 18, 1917 in St. Clair, Michigan
Killed in action in Germany Jan. 22, 1945 in WWII. He is buried in the Luxembourg American Cemetery in Hamm, Luxembourg.
Cpl. Bruce N. Turner, U.S. Army Air Corp
Born Mar. 9, 1913 in Port Huron, Michigan
Killed in action Mar. 31, 1945 while serving with 415th Night Fighter Squadron. He is buried in the Riverlawn Cemetery in Marysville, Michigan.
Pfc. John W. Turner, U.S. Army
Born July 2, 1915 in Oxford, Michigan
Died Nov. 20,1944 of wounds received in Germany during WWII. He is buried in the Riverlawn Cemetery in Marysville, Michigan.
WO. Michael J. Pelch, U.S. Army
Born May 2, 1946 in Columbiaville Michigan. Former resident of Port Huron
Killed in action Sept. 10, 1968 in Vietnam while serving with the 114th Avn Co. He is buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Grand Blanc, Michigan.
