Names released in fatal 2-vehicle crash after Lincoln County police chase

CANTON – Charges are pending against a Sioux Falls man after a two-vehicle crash Dec. 31, during a police pursuit in Lincoln County.

William Pigg, 57, of Sioux Falls, was headed southbound on South Dakota Highway 115 when entering an intersection with U.S. Highway 18, colliding with another car.

The other driver, Rebecca Earll, 40, of Canton, was struck by the vehicle Pigg was driving and was pronounced dead on the scene. Earll was wearing a seatbelt, according to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety.

Records indicate that Pigg was driving a 2007 Saturn Vue. Authorities have not released how the chase started, how fast the Saturn Vue being chase was going, whether speed played a factor in the crash and more.

Pigg, who wasn't wearing a seatbelt suffered life-threatening injuries and had to be extricated from the vehicle. He was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital and charges are pending against him. Those charges and his condition are currently unknown.

South Dakota's Highway Patrol is continuing to investigate the crash.
