Nancy Downard, Jim Mueller, Matthew Wynn running for Britton Deerfield school board

Voters in the Britton Deerfield school district are being asked to fill full and partial terms on the school board in the Nov. 8 election.

Incumbents Jim Mueller and Matthew Wynn are running for two six-year terms against Nancy Downard.

Corrie Fox and Jim Frayer are running unopposed for partial terms ending Dec. 31, 2026, on the Britton-Deerfield school board. Fox is running to replace Lee Hoffman. Frayer is already on the board. They were profiled in a separate story.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Nov. 8. Absentee ballots are available at township clerks' offices.

The Daily Telegram provided questionnaires to the candidates. The following Wynn and Downard's responses, lightly edited for clarity. The Telegram was unable to reach Mueller after several attempts.

Matt Wynn

Age: 40.

Occupation: Journeymen lineman.

Spouse/kids: Wife, Jessica; son, Hunter; daughter, Hannah.

Government experience: Vice president Britton Deerfield school board; president of Local 258.

Volunteer/community service experience: Member of the Sons of American Legion.

Why are you running for the school board? To continue giving Deerfield a voice.

What do you think is the main challenge facing the district and what should be done about it? The main challenge is attracting more students and families to be Patriots. We have to keep putting our name out in the community letting them know how special Britton Deerfield is.

Why should people vote for you? (No response.)

Nancy Downard

Age: 39.

Spouse/kids: I've been married for 16 years. We have a 9-year-old and a 5-year-old.

Volunteer/community service experience: I am active with the parent teacher organization and I donate baked goods to different events in the community.

Why are you running for the school board? Having been a lifelong resident of Britton, I have a vested interest in helping to maintain and elevate a quality education within our district. The schools and their surrounding communities are an important part of our lives.

What do you think is the main challenge facing the district and what should be done about it? Student retention is one of the biggest challenges the district faces today. We need to build and promote our district's achievements and offerings to attract more families.

Why should people vote for you? I have ties to both the Britton-Macon and Deerfield communities. I have seen the district through many seasons — as a student, a parent and a community member who is invested in the future of the district. I will work to represent the values of our community.
