Much like the murder-mystery-teen drama Riverdale, the upcoming Nancy Drew TV series is set to bring an element of "darkness" to its main character.

Three years after CBS turned down a Nancy Drew series, The CW is now having another go at the show – this time following the story of the 18-year-old Nancy after her high school graduation.

In the new adaptation of the classic Carolyn Keene novels, a family tragedy strikes and Nancy (played by Kennedy McMann) is quickly caught up in a murder investigation in which she uncovers a bunch of dark secrets.

Speaking on the 2019 Comic-Con panel in San Diego, the show's executive producers Stephanie Savage and Noga Landau explained that The CW's take on Nancy Drew will show the teen in a new light.

"When we were putting this together we started with the idea of everything we loved about Nancy Drew – that she was brave and smart and fearless," Stephanie said.

"But there was also something to her, she wasn't just a good girl. She also had a little darkness to her. We all really gravitated to our favourite Nancy Drew stories having that element of darkness."

Noga continued: "Bringing her into nowadays, it's showing that Nancy Drew isn't perfect in 2019. She did everything right in the early books but now she is complicated."

The pair also teased some great Easter eggs for fans of the classic novels and explained that they've put a LOT of research into it.

"We have a really great research intern who goes through all the books when we need an Easter Egg," Noga added.

"A lot of Nancy Drew fans in the writers' room are just waiting for places to put things in the show."

Nancy Drew is set to begin on October 9, 2019 on The CW.
