Nancy Power gets college degree at age 102

ZANESVILLE − Just a few weeks shy of her 103rd birthday, Nancy Power Hodous of Zanesville achieved a lifelong goal of earning a college degree. The team at The Oaks at Bethesda, where she is a resident, worked with Zane State College to make her dream a reality.

The school bestowed an associate of public service degree upon Hodous during a recent ceremony at the care facility. She walked down the aisle to "Pomp and Circumstance" to accept her degree dressed in a cap and gown with a corsage.

A public service degree felt like a perfect fit for Hodous as she is known locally for her philanthropic work with several organizations, including the historical society and others, as well as for her passion for poetry.

“Nancy has such a zest for learning, with her love of poetry and continued education. We are so honored to present her with this degree. Nancy is proof that it’s never too late in life to keep reaching for your dreams,” said Tiffany Goins, executive director at The Oaks at Bethesda.

Hodous' graduation ceremony was made possible by the Live a Dream program, part of Trilogy Health Service’s community foundation, which helps seniors continue to experience things they never have or fulfill a lifelong wish.

Hodous has taken several business and arts and poetry courses at the college level and even had the opportunity to audit a poetry class at Harvard University. Her favorite poets are Robert Frost and Ralph Waldo Emerson.
