Naperville’s downtown Washington Street bridge closed in both directions; drivers need to find alternate routes

Traffic is closed in both directions on Washington Street bridge between Chicago and Aurora avenues in downtown Naperville, according to the city’s mass notification system.

The closure will last until about 5 p.m. Thursday. The city is advising drivers to find alternative routes and expect delays if traveling through the area.

City spokeswoman Linda LaCloche said underground water lateral work that’s being done as part of ongoing bridge construction resulted in the unplanned closure.

“It’s an old bridge. When crews get in there, they don’t really know what they’re going to find,” she said. “We were just alerting drivers as we came upon rush hour to avoid the area if possible.”

Washington Street bridge has been under construction since the spring. Crews are working on a full replacement of the decades-old bridge.

Renovations, which are two months behind schedule, aren’t set to finish until November 2024.
