Naples Pride Fest set for June 10 even after controversy: What to expect

Though it faced controversy with the Naples City Council, Naples Pride Fest is set to take place in Cambier Park on June 10.

The festival organizers had to defend their event in front of the city council in February and March after a group of protesters alleged that Naples Pride exposed children to inappropriate drag performers. The Naples Police Department did not find any evidence that the performers were dressed provocatively but Naples Pride decided to hold this year's drag shows indoors as a safety precaution.

Here's what to expect at Naples Pride Fest this year.

Will there be protesters?

Naples Pride Director Cori Craciun says she expects protesters, but isn't sure how many.

"Last year we had maybe three and then there were really no issues," Craciun said. "We expect maybe a few more this year, but we're doing everything we can to make sure that we can have a fun and safe event."

She's prepared to get law enforcement involved if needed.

"If they're going to behave in a way that it's not acceptable, we're just going to have to ask the law enforcement to escort them out," Craciun said.

What's the difference between regular admission and VIP?

VIP admission will allow attendees to see the indoor drag shows and be around the performers. Tickets are $25 and cover two drinks as well as admission. Attendees must be over the age of 18 to purchase a VIP ticket and see the drag shows.

Normal admission is $5 and allows access to the festival which includes vendors, food, and live entertainment. Attendees with normal admission tickets will not be allowed into the VIP area where the drag performers are.

What are the dining options?

Naples Pride Fest will host multiple food trucks with different options like pizza, hot dogs, tacos, and shaved ice.

"Every food truck is different," Craciun said. "We try to give people options."

Is the event kid-friendly?

Craciun says the event will be kid-friendly, as it has been since its start.

She said there will be a kids' zone with bounce houses, puppies, painting, and a magician for kids to enjoy.

Is there a dress code?

Craciun says she's never encountered an issue with an attendee wearing something inappropriate.

"If we see that something's not appropriate, then we'll address it at the time," Craciun said. "We want people to come as they feel and express their personality."

Last year, attendees wore things like pride-themed attire but some just wore whatever would keep them cool in the summer heat. Some brought pride flags to wear on their shoulders and others wore bright colors and patterns.

Who will be working the event?

Naples Pride Fest has 90 volunteers so far. They'll be identifiable by matching T-shirts at the event. If you're interested in volunteering at the event, you can sign up here.

Craciun said the event will also be protected by several security and police officers in and out of uniform.

"We're doing our best and the law enforcement is doing their best to make it a safe event," Craciun said. "They're really taking this very, very, very seriously because they know what's at risk. We don't want to put anybody in harm's way."
