An arrest warrant for second-degree murder was issued Tuesday for Piri, and deputies with the Collier County Sheriff’s Office assisted Vermont State Police detectives in arresting him Thursday.

Piri is a certified physician in Florida and is listed at Physicians Regional Medical Group, Founders Square, in internal medicine, specializing in a variety of aspects of primary care for adults and geriatrics.

His physician licensure in Connecticut is marked active but expired May 31.

Fonseca-Rivera was found shot to death in his Katsiroubas Produce truck he had been driving along Vermont Route 103 in Rockingham. Piri and Fonseca-Rivera did not know each other.

At the time, Piri lived in Connecticut and was returning home from his property in Londonderry, Vermont.

State police learned that Piri was driving a 2018 Toyota Tundra on Vermont Route 103 in close proximity to Fonseca-Rivera’s delivery truck on the day in question.

Detectives reviewed surveillance footage, GPS data, photographs and other information to determine that Piri was driving immediately in front of Fonseca-Rivera just before the shooting occurred.

Police did not release any other details. It was not immediately known if Piri is being represented by an attorney. He was being held in Naples, and faces extradition to Vermont, the county sheriff’s office said.
