Napoleon has finally confirmed its streaming release date, with the historical epic set to hit Apple TV+ next month.

Ridley Scott's biopic sees Joaquin Phoenix play the role of the titular French military commander, charting his rise to emperor as well as his relationship with Joséphine de Beauharnais (Vanessa Kirby).

Much like the release for Killers of the Flower Moon, Napoleon hit the big screen before making its way to streaming service, but fans now don't have to wait long as Apple TV+ confirmed the film would land on their streaming service on March 1.

The film received mixed reviews upon its release, with many critics citing its numerous historical inaccuracies as a weak point. Scott, who had previously directed Gladiator and Alien, responded to the criticism, telling detractors to "get a life".

The director did explain that most of the authenticity was devoted to the film's portrayal of the central character, revealing that he spent ample time with Phoenix to develop a realistic portrayal of the historical figure.

"He is deeply vulnerable, and while doing his job he's able to hide that under a marvellous front," said Scott. "His forceful personality was part of his theatre… Who was this person, and why was he vulnerable? And it was this woman called Joséphine."

The role of Joséphine was originally set to be played by Jodie Comer, but the star withdrew from the project after committing to the one-woman stage play, Prima Facie. In an interview, Comer explained that scheduling conflicts are a trait of the industry, calling it a "sliding doors" moment.

"That was a choice I had to make, and I didn't look back, in a sense," she explained. "I really wanted to do the film, but now, Josephine is Vanessa's role. I'm so happy for her. A lot of this industry is sliding doors, and I do feel like I was always supposed to do that play."

Napoleon will stream on Apple TV+ from March 1.
