Nappy Roots member recovering after being shot following a robbery at his Atlanta brewery

A member of famed Kentucky-based rap group Nappy Roots is recovering after being shot following a robbery Wednesday night at a brewery the group owns near downtown Atlanta.

A release published Thursday on behalf of Nappy Roots and Atlantucky Brewing confirmed group member Scales suffered a gunshot wound to the leg following the incident. He was in "stable condition" as of Thursday, according to the release, posted on Twitter by Atlanta-based marketing firm Rhythm Communications.

"I am certainly relieved that my business partner and brother Scales is safe and recovering," said Skinny, a Nappy Roots rapper and co-owner of the brewery.

The Nappy Roots are an award-winning rap group that formed in the 1990s in Bowling Green, Kentucky. They released their most recent album, "The 40 Akerz Project," in 2017 and in April headlined the first night of a Waterfront Wednesday concert showcase in Louisville.

Scales, alongside a patron from the bar, were walking to a parking deck at about 11 p.m. Wednesday when two men robbed them at gunpoint, according to a release from the Atlanta Police Department.

After the patron fled on foot, the gunmen forced Scales to drive to his home in Hapeville, Georgia, about seven miles from the brewery, the release said. Scales was shot while trying to flee, according to Atlanta police.

After the suspects fled, Scales went to a nearby home to call the police and was subsequently taken to the hospital, the police statement said.

Nappy Roots' release said this is the first incident at the brewery since it opened in February 2022. The group added that no damage was done to the brewery and nothing was successfully taken.

"The team will be proactively increasing security to further ensure the safety of its customers and employees," the statement said.

No arrests have been made in the ongoing investigation, Atlanta police said.
