NASA is No. 1 in list's top 20 'Best Employers' list for 2023. Here's where Publix ranks

If you want to be a part of the best company to work for in Florida, according to Forbes, you might want to brush up on your math.

NASA was named the best employer in Florida in Forbes' fifth annual "America's Best Employers by State," released in August and based on a survey of employee satisfaction, diversity and working conditions from 70,000 workers.

NASA also scored as No. 1 employer in Texas, made No. 30 in Forbes' "Best Employers for Women" list for 2023. and was No. 1 in Florida last year, as well. In March, NASA was named the best place to work in federal government by the Partnership for Public Service for the 11th year in a row.

The top Florida-based companies this year were medical ones: Sarasota Memorial Hospital, at No. 4 (up from #22 last year), and Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa at No. 13 (dropped from No. 2 in 2022).

A little surprisingly, considering the company's reputation for being a good place to work, Publix Super Market ranked 16th. However, that's a jump up from last year's ranking of No. 28, and Publix is No. 133 in Forbes' "Best Employers for Women" list for 2023. Three former and current Publix assistant managers in three states are suing the company for lack of overtime pay.

And there were some drops, such as the city of Tallahassee. The city ranked No. 5 in the state in 2022 but didn't make the list this year.

Most of the top companies ranked were national ones with a presence in Florida such as Costco, Google, Microsoft, Cisco Systems and Fidelity Investments.

The best places to work in the U.S.? Samsung Electronics and Microsoft were Nos. 1 and 2, respectively for the second straight year, with Alphabet (Google's parent company) at No. 3, Apple at No. 4 and Ferrari at No. 5.
