A Los Angeles resident captured timelapse footage of a SpaceX rocket launching a NASA spacecraft towards an asteroid on November 23.

The footage, by Stephen Saux, shows light streaking across the night sky. Saux said the video was filmed in the Studio City neighborhood of Los Angeles.

“Studio City is less than two miles from Universal Studios. A lot of light pollution here and even some thin clouds but still a beautiful sight,” he said.

The launch was the beginning of a mission to test asteroid-deflecting technology, NASA said.

“The goal of the mission is to see if intentionally crashing a spacecraft into an asteroid is an effective way to change its course, should an Earth-threatening asteroid be discovered in the future,” NASA said in a blog post about the launch. Credit: Stephen Saux via Storyful
