NASCAR Cup Series at Daytona: Starting lineup, TV schedule for Sunday's race
The NASCAR Cup Series playoff picture had a major shift this week leading into Saturday's regular season finale race at Daytona.
Kurt Busch announced Thursday that he would miss the start of the Cup Series playoffs with concussion-like symptoms, and that he and the No. 45 23XI Racing team would be withdrawing his playoff injury waiver. Busch suffered an injury during a practice crash at Pocono six weeks ago. Busch was to be eligible via playoff waiver after winning at Kansas in the spring.
That means that two playoff spots are up for grabs with one regular season race remaining. Ryan Blaney has an edge over Martin Truex Jr. for the first wild card spot, and each cannot be caught by another driver in the regular season points standings. If Saturday's winner is not among the winless drivers this year, Blaney and Truex are in the playoffs.
Still, some very good superspeedway drivers will be pushing for their first victory of 2022. Michael McDowell, Brad Keselowski, Blaney and Bubba Wallace won the superspeedway races last year, and none of them have a win this year. Aric Almirola, Austin Dillon and Justin Haley all have won at Daytona in the Cup Series.
