Bojangles customers will get more than chicken and biscuits on Friday at one Charlotte-area store.

NASCAR’s Dale Earnhardt Jr. will help make and serve the scratch-made biscuits from 9 to 11 a.m. for National Buttermilk Biscuit Day at 802 Sears St. in Kannapolis, according to Bojangles. The new store opened in March, replacing the restaurant on South Cannon Boulevard, Bojangles spokesperson Stacey McCray said.

There’s a 49-step process to making Bojangles’ biscuits, according to the Charlotte-based company. Each store has a certified “Master Biscuit Maker” and biscuits are made fresh every 20 minutes, according to Bojangles.

Earnhardt Jr. will get a crash course in biscuit making, then work the drive-thru, according to Bojangles.

“Can’t wait to serve up some biscuits tomorrow,” Earnhardt Jr. said on Twitter Thursday afternoon.

Earnhardt Jr. and Bojangles

The 26-time NASCAR Cup Series winner from Kannapolis is the voice of the company’s slogan, “It’s Bo time.”

Two years ago, Earnhardt Jr. and the iconic chicken-and-biscuit chain formed the company’s first celebrity advertising partnership.

Last year, Earnhardt Jr.’s podcast studio was named Bojangles Studio. “The Dale Jr. Download” and industry-insider show, “Door Bumper Clear,” are recorded at the Mooresville studio.

The Bojangles Studio features a neon Bojangles sign, window decals and “chicken, hot biscuits and freshly steeped sweet tea” for Earnhardt Jr.’s Dirty Mo Media hosts, team members and guests.

Biscuit business expansions

Bojangles, founded in 1977 in Charlotte, has about 760 restaurants in 14 states.

The fast-food chain has been undergoing a major expansion over the last two years with over 140 stores planned — including debuts in Ohio, New York and Texas. Over 40 restaurants also opened at Love’s Travel Stops.

Charlotte-based Bojangles, known for its biscuits, is celebrating National Buttermilk Biscuit Day with celebrity spokesman Dale Earnhardt Jr. Friday, May 13, at the 802 Sears Street, Kannapolis, store.

And a biscuit battle is underway in the Charlotte region with expansions by other smaller Southern restaurant chains.

In March, Greensboro-based Biscuitville with 62 stores in North Carolina and Virginia opened a store in Kings Mountain. Last year, the family-owned restaurant opened a store in Concord and has other regional locations in Indian Trail and Salisbury.

Charleston-based Viscous Biscuit also is expanding and expects to open its first Charlotte store this month at 8200 Providence Road in The Arboretum shopping center. The four-year-old company has two locations and is planning to expand in other markets this year, tripling its size.
