NASCAR Xfinity series driver Blaine Perkins remained hospitalized under observation Sunday after a frightening rollover crash during Saturday’s NASCAR Xfinity race.

On lap 49 of the race, the Chevrolet Perkins was racing, in 33rd at the time, was hit by the car being driven by Dexter Stacey. Perkin’s car was sent nose first into the outside wall and tagged by another car which sent is barrel rolling down the backstretch finally coming to rest right side up.

Perkins climbed from the mangled remains of the machine and was taken to the infield care center. The race was red flagged for almost minutes. NASCAR said that Perkins, who was making his 21st career start in the series, would be taken to a local hospital “out of an abundance of caution”.

Sunday morning the Perkins family released a statement:

“Blaine is alert, in good spirits, and continues to be observed at a local hospital. We appreciate everyone’s thoughts and prayers. We will continue to provide updates as they are available.”
