NASCAR Q&A: Kimi, Jimmie, UFOs? Talk to me about this Project 91 plan

Project 91? Is this anything like Area 51, complete with UFOs?

Well, there should be flying objects involved, but only the four-wheeled, ground-hugging variety.

This might be a fleeting dream, as many racing dreams tend to be, or it might be the tip of something pretty neat.

Given how quickly Justin Marks has gotten his Trackhouse team up to speed, let’s give him a puncher’s chance, at minimum.

Trackhouse will field a No. 91 car or former F1 champ Kimi Raikkonen later this summer at Watkins Glen, and that'll draw plenty of international attention.

More to follow that, says Marks, who knows how to speak the modern corporate lingo: “Project 91’s mission is to activate the intersection point of NASCAR racing and global motorsport culture.”

So, it won’t be a one-and-done?

It might be, given the fickle nature of auto racing, but not by design. In fact, a certain rumor is bubbling up, and it involves a seven-time NASCAR champ and the two major races we just watched this past weekend.

Jimmie Johnson’s Indy 500 ended with a single-car crash in the closing laps, but the Month of May at Indy only increased his appetite for more, and next time, he just might bring back the Indy-Charlotte double — at least he’s planted the seed.

And Trackhouse’s Project 91 seems like a logical seat, complete with Trackhouse’s apparent ability to handle the business end of the effort.
