NASCAR Q&A: Kurt Busch as capable elder statesman? Who saw that one coming?

Do we re-evaluate Kurt Busch’s career yet again?

It seems like an annual chore, no doubt, but yes, Sunday’s win at Kansas has added another milepost on Kurt’s journey from early-career greatness to mid-career turbulence to late-career Steady Eddie.

He’s like the veteran pitcher a team picks up over the winter, knowing he’ll get 30 starts, keep you in most games, and chew up a ton of innings. Give him one or two working pitches and he’ll give you six or seven quality innings.

In this case, give Kurt four wheels (and, this year, four working lug nuts!) and he’ll pile up some top-10s and grab a win if available. It’s quite a remarkable career arc, quite frankly.

Oh, and let's never forget his sixth-place run in his first and only Indy 500, in 2014.

What’s new with the All-Star Race this year?

The format change with the most potential is the knockout qualifying idea.

The fastest eight drivers will advance to head-to-head competition (quarterfinals, semifinals and final) that involves a four-tire pit stop, a drop of the jack, and a haul of the mail back to the start-finish line.

Can’t say it’s often you hear the words, “Can’t wait to watch qualifying,” but here you go. Should be interesting . . . assuming no wheels come off!
