Any time NASCAR cranked the engines for a race at Daytona, drama and theatrics — with the occasional chaos — were practically a given.

And then they supercharged everything. Three seasons ago, NASCAR moved Daytona's summertime race — the Coke Zero Sugar 400 — to the 26th and final race of the 26-race regular season, preceding the 10-race playoffs.

With one last chance for many drivers to break into the playoffs, jet fuel was added to the tension, particularly in the closing laps, as the heavy traffic at high speed adds that extra important element to create white knuckles inside the cars, along pit road, and in living rooms across the land.

Daytona's summertime 400-miler began as a 250-mile race (Firecracker 250) during the Speedway's inaugural year in 1959 and was run in early July through 2019.
