NASCAR's Cup Series race is coming to St. Louis area in 2022

The top series in NASCAR is coming to the St. Louis area for the first time, officials announced on Wednesday.

World Wide Technology Raceway — located in Madison, Illinois — is scheduled to host a NASCAR Cup Series race in June 5, 2022, according to a release.

The track previously hosted NASCAR’s junior circuit — currently known as the Xfinity Series — and continues to hold IndyCar and NHRA events. It is a 1.25-mile oval just minutes from St. Louis.

“I set some ambitious goals when I took over the racetrack and to see them come to fruition is a dream come true,” WWTR owner Curtis Francois, said in a release. “Thanks to the hard work of our team . . . I am proud to welcome the NASCAR Cup Series to the St. Louis region. I can’t wait to celebrate this incredible victory with our fans.”

Francois purchased the track in 2011.

NASCAR reconfigured its 2022 schedule to add races to the St. Louis area by removing one of the two trips to Pocono Raceway. The NASCAR Cup schedule remains at 36 races.

Andrew C. Taylor, founding chair of Greater St. Louis, Inc. and executive chairman of Enterprise Holdings Inc., said it will further enhance the metropolitan area’s reputation for sports.

“Earning a NASCAR Cup race solidifies St. Louis’ position as one on the nation’s premier markets for professional sports, fan experiences and tourism,” Taylor said in the release. “Curtis Francois and the team at the raceway have delivered a significant win for the Metro East and the entire St. Louis region.”
