Nashua, Manchester, 4 Other NH Schools Receive Literacy Grants

NASHUA, NH — Nashua, Manchester, and four other Granite State schools are receiving grants from the Children’s Literacy Foundation to promote literacy and books.

The foundation, located in Waterbury Center, Vermont, is providing $25,000 to the Dr. Norman W. Crisp Elementary School as well as the Enfield Village School, the Bethlehem Elementary School, the Canaan Elementary School, and Paul Smith Elementary in Franklin. The Beech Street School in Manchester was also awarded a modified version of the grant. Four schools in Vermont also received $25,000.

The grants, called “year of the book,” were awarded to elementary and middle schools serving pre-K to sixth-graders that have “demonstrated a commitment to literacy and creative ideas for celebrating reading and writing,” according to the org. The schools also have to have a significant percentage of students underperforming on reading and writing assessments, as well as students from under-resourced backgrounds.

The Dr. Crisp school received a grant in 2017, Principal Cherrie Fulton said.

“Reading is everything at Dr. Crisp,” she said. “Many of our students in the upper grades remember the impact of the Year of the Book from the 2017-2018 school year and have vivid memories of author visits and book giveaways. This upcoming year is going to be even better. We can’t wait.”

The grants hope to create a culture of literacy within the school community while also encouraging reading and writing. Literacy will also be integrated into the curriculum. Storyteller visits are also encouraged as well as family events, new books, and interactivity with libraries.

“CLiF was so impressed by the enthusiasm of all our Year of the Book grant applicants,” Program Director Meredith Scott said. “Their dedication to their students and their community, especially with the difficulties of COVID, and the creativity with which they plan to apply Year of the Book to their classroom and school calendars, really inspired our team."
