Nashville birthday party ends in gunfire as two die in Antioch shooting, police say

Two people died Saturday night after an exchange of gunfire at the Cambridge at Hickory Hollow apartment complex on Bell Road in Antioch, Nashville police said.

Two others were wounded in the shooting, but their injuries are not considered life threatening, according to the Metro Nashville Police Department. The shooting happened just after 10 p.m. Police believe it is connected with a birthday party that was being celebrated at a pool inside the complex.

A 20-year-old named Kalem Buford was taken by a private car to TriStar Centennial Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead, MNPD said. A second man, Demontae Darden, 18, was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting.

One of the injured men was an employee of the apartment complex, who thought the loud noises were fireworks, police said. When the man came outside to ask people to stop shooting off fireworks, he was shot in the leg, police said.

The other injured man is a 21-year-old who is a murder suspect free on a $150,000 bond, police said. The man was not named. He has been charged with murdering a 16-year-old girl in 2017.

Police homicide unit and TITANS (The Investigative Team Addressing Neighborhood Shootings) detectives are pursuing active leads in this case.

Anyone with information about the gunfire and/or the dispute that led up to it is asked to contact Crime Stoppers at 615-742-7463.
