Nashville District Attorney's Office finds officers justified in fatal Madison shooting

Three Metro Nashville Police officers were justified in their actions when they shot and killed Senquarius Williams last month, the Davidson County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday afternoon.

"The video footage established that officers who fired their weapons did so after and while Williams was firing at them," a news release from District Attorney Glenn Funk's office said.

Funk's office asked the Tennessee Bureau of Investigations, tasked with overseeing the case, to take no further action against the officers.

Williams, 26, was killed Nov. 12 at a crime scene on Maple Street off Gallatin Pike in Madison around 2 a.m.

Madison precinct officers were on scene, investigating a non-fatal shooting, when Williams walked under the crime scene tape and fired toward officers, MNPD spokesperson Kris Mumford said last month. Three officers — Sgt. John Timm, Sgt. Leonard Spadavecchia and Officer John Robish — returned fire, striking and killing Williams.

MNPD released edited body camera footage of the shooting. The video showed a man walk up to the scene, then under the crime scene tape toward an officer. The officer asked him to take his hands out of his pockets.

The man can be seen pulling a gun out and raising it up before firing several shots. He was then hit by return gunfire and collapsed.

None of the officers were injured.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigations led the investigation of the fatal police shooting, as is standard practice since an agreement was made with the city in 2017.

"The officers' actions were justified in protecting themselves and other citizens in the area," the news release from the District Attorney's Office said. "We are requesting that the TBI close this case and no further action be taken."

The shooting was the first of two involving Metro Police that day. Drandon John Brown, 64, was fatally wounded by two officers on River Road Pike shortly after 6 p.m. That case remains under investigation.
