Nashville SC's Shaq Moore, Walker Zimmerman named to USMNT roster for Mexico friendly

The U.S. men's national team will play its 75th game against rival Mexico next week in the inaugural Allstate Continental Clásico in Glendale, Arizona.

Nashville SC defenders Shaq Moore and Walker Zimmerman could play a part in it.

USMNT interim coach Anthony Hudson called up Moore and Zimmerman to join a majority domestic-based, 23-man squad for the friendly at State Farm Stadium. Zimmerman participated in the USMNT's annual January camp, starting both games, one of which as captain. But Moore's inclusion in this month's national team assembly is the right back's first since the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar last fall.

The Nashville duo, who will be available for Saturday's game at New York City FC at Citi Field in Queens, are two of 10 World Cup veterans. However, Hudson named a slew of Major League Soccer players that could make their senior national debut, including 18-year-old Atlanta United defender Caleb Wiley, Louisville City's Joshua Wynder, as well as goalkeepers Drake Callendar of Inter Miami CF and Roman Celentano of FC Cincinnati.

AC Milan defender Sergiño Dest and FC Juárez midfielder Alan Soñora are the only players currently playing outside of MLS or second-tier USL.

The Allstate Continental Clásico is an annual event the U.S. designed that will pin the USMNT against an opponent from North, Central or South America. The U.S. has not played in Arizona since January 2019 and is 17-9-7 against Mexico since 2000.

Zimmerman was one of five U.S. players on this roster who played against Mexico in their last meeting, during Concacaf World Cup Qualifying in March 2022. Zimmerman and Inter Miami's DeAndre Yedlin started the scoreless draw at Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
