Nashville weather: Damaging winds, quarter-size hail, tornadoes possible Wednesday

Another round of severe weather appears poised to hit Middle Tennessee Wednesday afternoon and evening, the National Weather Service said.

"The main threats will be damaging straight-line winds and large hail, but a few tornadoes are possible," the NWS tweeted Tuesday morning. "We'll have more information on the Wednesday severe weather threats later today."

Initially, the weather appeared to be an excessive rain event for Middle Tennessee but has since escalated to a threat of straight-line winds up to 60 mph and quarter-sized hail. Winds could take down trees and cause power outages while hail could cause significant property damage.

There will also be significant cloud-to-ground lightning and outdoor events will likely be impacted by the weather, the NWS said.

According to the latest prediction, a diagonal swath of Middle Tennessee from Lawrenceburg to Murfreesboro and up to Jamestown are at slight risk (2 out of 5) for severe weather. Nashville and the remaining northwestern counties in Middle Tennessee are at an enhanced risk (3 out of 5).

The NWS believes the weather be in Middle Tennessee between 1 p.m. and 8 p.m.
