Nashville weather: Severe thunderstorm watch for several southern Middle Tennessee counties

Nashville and Middle Tennessee are at a risk for strong to damaging winds, frequent cloud to ground lightning and some large hail on Monday, August 14, 2023.

Nashville and Middle Tennessee are primed for another round of severe storms, but cooler temperatures will follow providing a break from the mid-August heat.

Storms are expected to hit the area Monday between 4 p.m. and 10 p.m., the National Weather Service said. The highest threat is expected to be for areas east of Interstate 65. Nashville and counties west of the city are under a marginal risk (1 of 5) while a slice of Middle Tennessee on the eastern side is under a slight risk (2 of 5).

A severe Thunderstorm watch has been issued until 2 a.m. for Bedford, Cannon, Coffee, Cumberland, DeKalb, Giles, Grundy, Marshall, Van Buren, Warren and White Counties.

Strong to damaging winds will be possible with this round of storms and remain the main threat, NWS said. Strong winds can lead to tree damage and power outages.

"Brief heavy downpours leading to localized flooding and frequent cloud to ground lightning will also be possible," NWS said. "Some large hail will be possible. Brief tornado formation cannot be ruled out."

Once the storms pass by, Nashville could see highs in the mid-70s before another warm up into the weekend. Most importantly, rain is not in the forecast again until a 10% chance on Sunday.
