A stray cat with a microchip from Italy has sparked an international mystery, of sorts, as social media users in Nashville set out to find her owners.

A mysterious stray cat captured the attention of Nashvillians on social media after Metro Nashville Animal Care and Control said she had a microchip that was implanted in Italy.

Unfortunately, the microchip was not registered, so the owners' information is unknown, MACC said.

The cat was found near the airport. MACC filed a report with the airport and posted a photo of the orange, female cat on social media.

A Facebook post about the cat has been shared nearly 150 times since going up on Wednesday afternoon.

Commenters had a lot of theories about how the cat may have ended up in Nashville: Was it a stowaway? Had it been traveling internationally with someone, maybe a military family, and escaped from a cargo hold? Does it belong to a family that moved to the United States?

Commenters offered suggestions on how to track down the cat's owners and shared it widely across different Facebook pages and groups.

"Post a TikTok about this!" commenter Danielle Nicole suggested. "They can find anything."
