Here are the top stories in Mineola today:

  1. Nassau County is sponsoring a gun collection to send weapons to help Ukrainians fight against Russian invaders, as announced by Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman. Residents can donate unloaded legal rifles and shotguns at SP Firearms at 804 Hempstead Turnpike in Franklin Square on Friday and Saturday from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and Monday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Those who donate will receive a receipt that also states they no longer possess the firearm. (Garden City Patch)

  2. Long Island elementary students went to school unmasked for the first time in two years on Wednesday, and their reactions were mixed. Some students rejoiced and enjoyed the freedom of being without masks in Massapequa Park. Other students in Garden City still feared another COVID-19 resurgence and were mindful about respecting the choice of students who continued to wear masks. (CBS New York)

  3. With St. Patrick's Day parades set to return to the island this year — perhaps most notably in Mineola this Sunday, March 6 John O’Connell, a former executive editor for Herald Community Newspapers asks people to look beyond the festivities and remember the many important contributions of Irish Americans. To name just a few, he cites Walt Disney, actor and dancer Gene Kelly, playwright Eugene O’Neill, author F. Scott Fitzgerald and Bruce Springsteen, who has part Irish ancestry. (liherald.com)
