Here are the top stories today in Mineola:

  1. Nassau County will receive $20 million this week in the first round of payments from the historic opioid settlements, as announced by New York State Attorney General Letitia James on Tuesday. The funds, which come from three major opioid distributors, will be used for drug treatment and prevention programs. Dr. Jeffrey Reynolds, president and chief executive officer of the Family and Children's Association in Mineola, said that these funds are sorely needed: "The overdose crisis continues, especially across Nassau and Suffolk, but is complicated further by a dramatic surge in alcohol use and mental health challenges associated with COVID-19." (Patch)

  2. Andrea Ceriello, the founder of Ceriello Fine Foods in Williston Park, succumbed to lymphoma and passed away at age 69. Ceriello ran the store at 541 Willis Ave. from 1982 until his death on April 14. Throughout the years Ceriello’s had nine locations, including three on Long Island, two in New York City and two in Baltimore. The brand was renowned for its high-quality cuts of meat, imported Italian ingredients, prepared foods, and pasta sauces sold in grocery stores. (Patch)

  3. Steven Clancy, senior pitcher for the Farmingdale State Rams, earned an 11-1 victory over non-conference opponent Ramapo and moved up to a 6-1 ranking overall for the season. Clancy, a 2017 graduate of Mineola High School, pitched 6.2 scoreless innings. He now ranks second in the Skyline Conference and 21st in the NCAA. (Farmingdale Rams)
