Nate Jones announces candidacy for Cherokee County Sheriff position

CHEROKEE COUNTY, Kan. — Less than three days after the announcement that current Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves is stepping down – there is already someone in the running to replace him.

Nate Jones has announced he will run for the position.

He’s the current Chief Deputy with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office.

Jones filed his declaration for the position with the Cherokee County Clerk – late last week.

He has been with the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office for the last eight years – and was named Kansas Sheriff Deputy of the Year in 2023.

Back on Friday, current Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves announced his departure from the position.

He says, though, he will stay on, until Governor Laura Kelly appoints a replacement.

Groves cited various professional opportunities outside of law enforcement that surfaced over the past couple of months for his reason for leaving.
