Nathan Fillion's police procedural The Rookie has been renewed for season 6.

The hit series, which has run on ABC since 2018, follows the Castle star's character John Nolan as he becomes the oldest rookie in the LAPD.

Ahead of the season 5 finale next month, ABC has confirmed that the show will be back for another season afterwards.

The Rookie was given a spin-off series last year called The Rookie: Feds, which focuses on season 4 guest star Niecy Nash as rookie police officer Simone Clark.

Back in January, the two shows aired a crossover event with their respective midseason winter premieres.

Speaking about the prospect of more crossovers in the future, co-showrunner Alexi Hawley recently told Entertainment Weekly: "ABC is moving us to Tuesdays at 8pm, and then Feds comes right after.

"It's incredible. That's a seismic vote of confidence from ABC, building a night around us. It's a seamless two hours. It's really special how it comes together."

Last year, Hawley confirmed that the two shows would cross over, saying: "The way Feds tell stories is slightly different, whereas FBI is more an investigative show vs a patrol show. We are trying to crossover as much as we can."

Fellow show boss Terence Paul Winter added: "We shoot on the same lot which makes it easier."

As well as The Rookie, Fillion is well known for playing Richard Castle in Castle, which ran between 2009 and 2016, and Malcolm 'Mal' Reynolds in the short-lived cult hit Firefly, which originally aired in 2002.

The Rookie airs on ABC in the US and airs on Sky Witness in the UK. It can also be streamed on NOW.
