The intersection of West National Avenue and South Layton Boulevard is daunting for pedestrians. West National Avenue is to undergo major road work that includes safety improvements.

A planned rebuild of Milwaukee's West National Avenue − which could include cutting the number of traffic lanes in half − will be the subject of two upcoming meetings to gather public input.

The Wisconsin Department of Transportation and the City of Milwaukee are hosting the meetings, scheduled for 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. June 8 and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 10 at Milwaukee Area Technical College's Education Center at Walker Square, 816 W. National Ave.

The meetings will be in an open house format with maps and other materials showing design details, according to WisDOT. Representatives will be present to discuss the project on an individual basis.

One of Milwaukee's biggest upcoming road projects, it will replace the pavement and make other changes to all of West National Avenue within the city limits. That's 2.6 miles between South First and South 39th streets.

That work could start by late 2025 and is expected to take at least two years.

All or part of the four-lane road could end up with two lanes under a traffic analysis being conducted by city and state officials. The idea is slow down traffic on what is one of Milwaukee's worst streets for car crashes that cause injuries.

Other changes could include protected bike lanes.

The meeting facility is on Milwaukee County Transit System's Route 18 bus line and is accessible to people using wheelchairs.

Deaf or hard of hearing persons needing assistance may contact the WisDOT project representative listed below via the Wisconsin Telecommunication Relay System (dial 711).

A Spanish interpreter will be onsite.

Those who would like another interpreter present at the meeting can contact the WisDOT project representative. To allow time for arranging assistance, please call several working days prior to the meeting.

For additional information about the proposed improvements, please contact WisDOT Project Manager, Debra Tarnow at 262-548-6768, debra.tarnow@dot.wi.gov or visit engagemke.com/national-avenue.
