Syphilis cases in babies skyrocket in Canada amid healthcare failures
The numbers of babies born with syphilis in Canada are rising at a far faster rate than recorded in the United States or Europe, an increase public health experts said is driven by increased methamphetamine use and lack of access to the public health system for Indigenous people. While syphilis has made a global resurgence over the last five years, Canada is an outlier among wealthy nations in its rate of increase: 13-fold over five years, according to Health Canada. The incidence of babies born with syphilis reached 26 per 100,000 live births in 2021, the most recent year available, up from 2 in 2017, according to the Health Canada data.

US softens cut to Medicare Advantage 2024 payments
It improved the rates it would pay insurers after pushback from the industry, which contended the government was cutting reimbursement rates by too much for them to adequately serve older people enrolled in their plans. The U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS) said it expected total payments for next year to rise by 3.3% from 2023, or around $13.8 billion, up from its 1% initial estimate, and reduced drops on some costs resulting from rule changes. Health insurers who operate Medicare Advantage plans have come under pressure after the government last month proposed new rules for an audit program to avoid overpaying them.

Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee to undergo surgery for cancer
Michigan Rep. Dan Kildee said Friday that he was diagnosed with a “serious but curable form of cancer” after a tumor was found in one of his tonsils. Kildee, 64, said he was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma that was detected very early by doctors and that he will have surgery in a few weeks to remove it. Kildee said doctors have advised him that recovery from surgery could take a few weeks.
