National Doughnut Day: Remembering Worcester's top ranking

For those people who ignore (resist?) the eye-catching racks of fresh doughnuts that are a backdrop to coffee transactions, Friday's the day to look beyond, to indulge.

National Doughnut Day, part marketing plan, part handy excuse, is Friday.

Worcester doughnut fans proudly recall when the city received the No. 1 ranking in an unscientific analysis of the country's top cities for doughnut lovers. As much as people tried to find holes in the 2021 report, the website rent.com determined that when it comes to doughnut shops per capita, Worcester came out on top - with 22 shops per 100,000 residents.

Others in the top five were: Rochester, New York; Jersey City, New Jersey; Providence; and Buffalo.

Meantime, some doughnut shops are celebrating the big day with specials. Dunkin' is giving away free doughnuts with a beverage purchase, at participating stores, minus Ben Affleck. Honey Dew Donuts has the same promotion.
