The 2023 NBA Draft lottery took place on Tuesday and the Dallas Mavericks were awarded the 10th selection in the 2023 NBA Draft.
This will be a critical pick for the Mavs as they desperately need another impact player to ease Luka Doncic’s burden.
The selection is also crucial because the Mavs are not guaranteed to retain Kyrie Irving in free agency and this pick is a surefire way to add significant young talent on a rookie contract.
National experts seem to think the Mavs need to target a two-way wing or a shooting specialist in this year’s draft.

After trading their best wing defender, Dorian Finney-Smith, in the Kyrie Irving deal, the Mavericks will almost certainly select a three-and-D wing here. UCF’s Taylor Hendricks project to be just that.
Selection: F Taylor Hendricks, UCF
Ricky O’Donnell, SB Nation
Anthony Black is a huge guard who should make a significant impact on the defensive end as he figures out his role offensively. At 6’7, 200 pounds, Black is a determined on-ball defender with sharp rotational instincts who could be able to switch across four positions at the NBA level.
Selection: G Anthony Black, Arkansas

An intriguing SG with a beautiful release on his jumper and great 3pt ability. Is starting to score more inside the arc and is a pesky defender.
Selection: SG Jordan Hawkins, UConn

Hendricks’ combination of defensive versatility, high-level intensity and perimeter shooting will likely be attractive here.

The Kansas guard raised some eyebrows Monday afternoon at the NBA Draft Combine when he elected to participate in every activity, including shooting drills and 3-on-3 competition. Typically, players projected within the lottery skip any sort of competition to avoid exposure or injury. Dick shot 64% and finished with the fourth-best score in the 3-point star drill, and shot 76.7% and was sixth out of all players win shooting off the dribble.
Selection: G Gradey Dick, Kansas

The one-and-done Kentucky star may be the top perimeter defender in this draft, a major need for the Mavericks, who lost so much on that end of the floor after the Kyrie Irving trade.
His chase-down blocks became a staple of his game, and he showed promise as a playmaker (4.3 assists) capable of improving as a long-range shooter (34.6 percent).
Selection: G Carson Wallace, Kentucky
Kevin O’Connor, The Ringer
After losing Jalen Brunson in free agency for nothing, then trading core pieces from last year’s playoff squad for Kyrie Irving, this team is in a far worse place now, with a terrible defense. If they keep the pick, Walker might help here, providing bulk and versatility. On offense, he would be a great offensive complement to Luka Doncic as a screener and cutter.
Selection: Jarace Walker, Houston
Jonathan Wasserman, Bleacher Report
With the New York Knicks’ pick, the Mavericks could draft Dick for his shooting and the extra spacing he’d provide for the team’s star ball-handlers. There is a guarantee tied to his shot-making and its value/purpose to the rotation and eventual starting lineup.
Selection: G Grady Dick, Kansas

Tall wings who have the ability to shoot it -- and do so successfully in the multitude of ways Dick can shoot it -- don’t come around every draft. His game is tailor-made for an NBA role player with room to grow into more alongside a superstar in Luka Doncic.

Anthony Black is a swiss-army-knife prospect and prospects with his blend of size, playmaking, and defensive ability tend to hear their name called early in the draft. Black was also able to draw more total shooting fouls (80) than all high-major guards except just Judah Mintz, per CBB Analytics.
